Friends,

None of us enjoy negative political campaigns, especially during the Christmas season. Unfortunately, one of my opponents didn't get the memo and has been distributing some FAKE NEWS about me through mass text messages, radio, and direct mail. I wanted to make sure you have the truth.

The ads make the absurd claim that I support the "Defund the Police" movement. This couldn't be further from the truth, which is why my opponent is hiding behind a Massachusetts-based PAC to distribute these claims. "Coincidentally", this PAC also shares the same political consultant as my opponent. It’s swamp politics at its worst.

Here’s the TRUTH:

I served as the lone conservative on the leftist Austin City Council and was a staunch supporter of law enforcement. While there, I:

  • Increased the overall Austin police budget by 13%, adding $48 million to the law enforcement budget

  • Allocated an additional $44 million in additional pay and benefits to police officers

  • Hired more officers, increasing the number of sworn officers by 4.5%

  • Helped create a donated sick-leave program for APD officers

While the attack ads claim I “defunded the police,”  my record speaks for itself.  My opponent thinks you won’t notice that “defund the police" did not even start until 18 months AFTER I left the Council. Of course, I have consistently publicly condemned it, even leading a panel on why defunding will be so disastrous. My comments and my record on this issue are clear and consistent, I’ve always backed the blue. But, don’t take it from me,

"Ellen Troxclair has repeatedly stood up for police officers on the Austin City Council when no one else would. In fact, she went to battle with the city bureaucracy in order to name a street in memory of my friend, Officer Don Carpenter, who was killed in the line of duty. Ellen not only helped to get a pay raise for our officers and increase the size of our force, but she truly cares about law enforcement. I am disgusted by the lies that have been spread about her because they could not be further from the truth. She has earned my friendship and support time and time again and I know she will continue to fight for law enforcement as a member of the Texas House.”

- Officer Jim Brown, retired APD
